On June 1, just two weeks ahead of his official visit with Michigan State football, legacy recruit Adam Shaw committed to the home-state Rutgers Scarlet Knights, crushing any hope the Spartans had of landing him.

Now, two weeks later, Shaw's official visit with Michigan State is back on and he just decommitted from Rutgers, opening the door once again for the Spartans.

And Michigan State is trending heavily here.

Justin Thind of 247Sports reported the official visit and the decommitment on Thursday, even placing a crystal ball for the Spartans to land Shaw, the son of former All-American lineman Scott Shaw and 1996 Michigan State field hockey MVP Angela Shaw (formerly Angela DiJames).

Shaw is a star quarterback for his high school in New Jersey, but he's being recruited at the collegiate level as a linebacker thanks to his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame. He's going to translate to the defensive side of the ball and he comes from an athletic family so this transition should be seamless.

This is a great development for Michigan State's 2026 class because Shaw was considered a lost cause when he committed to Rutgers back on June 1, but this decommitment and subsequent official visit to East Lansing can only mean good things for the Spartans. All signs are pointing to him joining Jonathan Smith's 2026 class now.

It's crazy how quickly things can change on the recruiting trail.

Shaw is ranked the No. 47 linebacker in the 2026 class by 247Sports and he holds offers from the likes of Rutgers, Duke, Wake Forest, and Pitt. Not an elite offer sheet, by any means, but Shaw has potential to be the perfect MSU linebacker alongside Braylon Hodge.
