Every week during the regular season, Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football have made it a point to name one honorary captain to join the regular captains on the field for the coin toss.
The honorary captain in Week 1 was starting safety Armorion Smith. While he was relatively quiet in the opener, he delivered with a big defensive play in the second overtime that stopped a 2-point conversion attempt by Boston College. He also recovered a fumble in the first half while the Eagles were driving.
To keep the tradition going, Smith has named his Week 3 honorary captain ahead of the Youngstown State game. It's none other than Week 2 special teams star Alante Brown.

Brown delivered in Week 2 with a huge 63-yard kick return in the first half to set up a big touchdown to tie the game up. If not for that play, the Spartans don't bounce back after losing momentum in the first half. He sparked the offense in a big way with that return and got Spartan Stadium rocking again.
Following the big performance, Smith named Brown as one of the special teams players of the game, and the veteran wideout stated that he always dreamed of making big plays for the Spartans.
Can't argue with this pick for honorary captain because Brown has been working hard behind the scenes and often gets forgotten when talking about the Spartans' offense. He is one of the team's top unsung heroes, and he deserves his flowers.
Oh, and we learned that his nickname is "Cadillac", which is pretty cool.
