Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football have been on an absolute recruiting tear lately.
The second-year Michigan State coach has landed 15 commitments in his 2026 recruiting class since the start of June as he knocked official visit season out of the park (clearly).
That class has gone from being ranked in the 70s all the way up to No. 23 in the country and experts have been raving about the impressive job he's done. He took a juice-less program a month ago and turned it into the hottest team in the country on the recruiting trail.
And while rival fans can poke fun at the "Three-star U" moniker after landing mostly three-stars, Smith has picked up two four-star commitments and most of his pledges are coveted three-stars.
On Sunday, he landed arguably his best commit, flipping UCF four-star Tyren Wortham.
But with all the good comes some bad news. While his 2026 class is rising to new heights, his lone 2027 commit, four-star safety Khalil Terry, decided to reopen his recruitment, sucking the life out of the Spartans in the cycle and resetting the commit tracker to zero.
Tustin (Calif.) safety Khalil Terry, a 2027 recruit, announced earlier this evening that he has reopened his recruitment after backing off a commitment to Michigan State.

UCLA has been involved for quite some time and he has a strong relationship with Demetrice Martin. https://t.co/tWe3kJG1Ov
While this is a tough pill to swallow, it sounds like he's just making 100 percent sure that he made the correct decision. He's planning to release a top seven in the coming weeks and I wouldn't be completely shocked to see Michigan State on there -- although it also wouldn't surprise me to see him move on entirely.
This news kind of flew under the radar with all the recruiting momentum Jonathan Smith conjured up, but this is a tough blow to the 2027 class.
Terry was ranked the No. 201 overall recruit in the 2027 cycle.
