It might sound cliche, but when it rains, it pours. And right now, it's a torrential downpour on the Michigan State football program after missing on yet another top target.
The Spartans have been ice-cold on the recruiting trail in recent months and haven't secured a single 2026 commitment since February while the rest of the Power Four continues to build on its class. It's time for Jonathan Smith to make some noise.
He had a chance to do that with a four-star running back from his own backyard seemingly high on the Spartans, but he had a commitment ceremony on Friday and, well, he went elsewhere.
With a Michigan State hat on the table for the decision, Haslett, Mich., native Kory Amachree reached out and grabbed the Kansas hat, signaling his commitment to Lance Leipold.
This is an excruciating recruiting miss for the Spartans who are desperate for any good news at this point after Amachree spurned his home-state program for traditional Big 12 bottom-dweller Kansas. Yes, Kansas has been much better under Leipold as he's turned the program around, but Michigan State has too rich of a history to be losing local four-stars to the Jayhawks.
Unacceptable would be one word to use here.
Smith and Co. need to get back to the drawing board and it looks like they've already done that, offering a three-star Toledo commit from Detroit and securing an official visit with four-star Maryland native Damon Ferguson.
There are other options, but this is one of those recruitments you just have to win if you're Smith and you want to have sustained success in East Lansing.
It's time to put a winning product on the field to help recruiting.
