Michigan State football coach Pat Fitzgerald has officially secured commit No. 2 in the 2027 class.

The Spartans’ 2027 class sat at just one after Savior Owens committed earlier this month, but Fitzgerald picked up a need on the offensive line on Sunday afternoon.

Unranked, but first-team all-state, offensive lineman Grant Adloff committed to Michigan State and Fitzgerald just a week after receiving an offer from the new staff. He’ll likely receive his first ranking now that he’s committed much like Owens did when he chose the Spartans last week.

Adloff hasn’t been recruited as hard as he probably should be as a first-team all-state offensive lineman from Grand Rapids. His other major offer before committing to Michigan State was West Virginia and he had been recruited by mostly MAC schools.

Michigan State’s 2027 class won’t be turning any heads so far with a couple of under-recruited prospects, but these are the types of recruits that did well in the Mark Dantonio era.

Obviously the coaching has to match, but these talented yet undervalued prospects are what helped put that chip on Michigan State’s shoulder during the Dantonio era. He also needs to mix in some elite highly-coveted recruits, but Fitzgerald has the right idea — also focusing on the Midwest.

Pat Fitzgerald is addressing key needs

Fitzgerald wasted no time addressing key needs in both the transfer portal and to start the 2027 class. Although Owens isn’t exactly a need at running back, Adloff definitely fits that description.

Michigan State has also added several important needs in the portal along the offensive line and in the defensive backfield. I also liked what Fitzgerald was able to get at running back with Makhi Frazier moving on to Ole Miss, adding three backs in the portal while also returning Brandon Tullis, Zion Gist, and Jace Clarizio.

Turning a program around doesn’t happen overnight, and Fitzgerald knows that. He’s laying the foundation to a strong program by securing strength to the trenches.

I’d like to see more in the form of defensive linemen or receivers, but Fitzgerald is doing exactly what he needs to do in order to fix the mess than Jonathan Smith left.
