Fall camp is underway as Michigan State football is entering its second week of practice and the August heat means just one thing: the season is right around the corner.

The Spartans are fresh off a 5-7 season which ended with a thud against Rutgers, but Jonathan Smith and Co. are hoping to take a step forward in 2025, but it's going to take a heck of an effort. They have to get more from the offensive side of the ball, especially after making all the upgrades that they did along the line and in the receiving corps.

If Michigan State can improve on the field and make the postseason with 7-8 regular-season wins, we may be looking at a much better 2027 recruiting class.

Through two cycles, Smith has been recruiting at a decent level, but that needs to improve if Michigan State is going to compete in the Big Ten in the next few years. He'll need to find a mix of diamonds in the rough and blue-chippers, much like Mark Dantonio did.

So far, he's leaning heavily on diamonds in the rough, but he's already aiming high in the 2027 class, offering one of the top athletes in the country on Monday.

Matthew Gregory, a five-star athlete from Pennsylvania, stands 6-foot-1 and weighs in at about 170 pounds which means he's likely going to translate to a cornerback or receiver at the next level.

Gregory already holds 20 offers and he's received Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan, and Michigan State offers in just the past week and a half. He's been blowing up recently, but the Spartans are hoping to sell him on some early playing time because he's too talented to just ride the bench. That may be the leg up that Michigan State needs on the competition here.

The five-star from Pennsylvania is ranked the No. 39 overall recruit and third-best "athlete" prospect in the 2027 class, according to the composite.
