It was a big weekend for Michigan State football on the transfer portal recruiting trail as the Spartans landed another handful of commitments, pushing the class total up to 11.

After signing a relatively small high school class, it was important for Jonathan Smith and Co. to build up the roster and complement already-set positions through the transfer portal. And so far, he's doing a pretty good job.

Through the three weeks since the end of the regular season, Smith has addressed needs at receiver, running back, defensive back, and in the trenches.

The receiver position likely needs just one more addition after picking up two all-conference players from the Group of Five and the backfield seems to be set. The secondary may need 1-2 more guys and another linebacker wouldn't hurt. But we learned in 2024 that you can never have too many offensive or defensive linemen. Depth in the trenches is the key to success.

Over the weekend, Smith added another piece to the offensive line in All-ACC honorable mention guard selection Matt Gulbin from Wake Forest.

The 86-rated transfer, via 247Sports, was an honorable mention All-ACC selection this past season after playing 60-plus snaps in 11 games this past season. He allowed just one sack all year and was considered a top-50 guard nationally, per Pro Football Focus. He was also named the No. 3 guard in the ACC this past season by the PFF grading scale.

That bolsters the interior of the offensive line for next season and it's starting to come together nicely in the trenches for Jim Michalczik.

Michigan State adds Gulbin to the line that already added Caleb Carter and Luka Vincic this offseason. The interior offensive line is looking strong thanks to the portal.
