While the 2025 recruiting class isn't exactly star-studded, Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football targeted guys who will have long-term impacts in East Lansing.

And the high school recruiting class isn't nearly as important as the transfer class these days. College football has shifted and changed so much that recruiting classes mean less than transfer portal hauls. The portal guys are going to have the larger immediate impacts while the high school classes need 1-2 years before they see the field, on average.

So don't fret about Smith's 2025 class which ranks somewhere near No. 50 nationally because he's getting to work in that transfer portal.

Michigan State did lose a handful of receivers to the transfer portal over the past week in Antonio Gates Jr., Jaron Glover, Aziah Johnson, and Jaelen Smith but Smith is working to replace them.

Nick Marsh is seemingly the only returning target with any sort of solid production to speak of, but help might be on the way.

In fact, Smith has been pursuing two of the best wide receivers in the portal this week.

The first is North Texas All-AAC wideout DT Sheffield who had a whopping 11 touchdown receptions with 66 catches and 822 receiving yards this year. He also had a 75-yard touchdown run which just goes to show how electric of a receiver he is. He can take the top off of defenses.

The second elite receiver to be targeted by the Spartans is Nebraska's Malachi Coleman. He's the former No. 63 overall recruit from the 2023 class and he had eight catches for 139 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman, starting six games and playing in 11 that year. He opted to use his redshirt in 2024 so he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Both transfer receivers are considering visits to East Lansing as Smith continues to work on bolstering his receiving corps.
