Michigan State fans aren’t buying crazy conspiracy about Bryce Underwood

Yeah, this one seems a little too ridiculous.

It wouldn’t be a college football offseason without some crazy rumors an conspiracy theories. The latest conspiracy theory is about Michigan State’s biggest rival, but Spartan fans aren’t buying it — yet.

There has been talk all offseason about Michigan’s quarterback position and people have pretty strong opinions about former five-star sophomore Bryce Underwood who’s entering his second season as the Wolverines’ QB1. His first season wasn’t horrendous, but it definitely didn’t live up to expectations, but I can attribute a lot of that to poor coaching.

Now that the Wolverines have gone through a coaching change, bringing in who I considered to be one of the most underrated coaches in the country, there’s hope for Underwood again.

The talent is obviously there, but the 2,428 yards over 13 games, 60.3% completion rate, and nine interceptions to 11 touchdowns left a lot to be desired in 2025. With the right coaching (Kyle Whittingham), I believe that Underwood can live up to that five-star potential.

But there’s an insane conspiracy circulating on the Utah message boards right now. It even made its way to Message Board Geniuses which is an account on Twitter that makes fun of ridiculous message board claims, conspiracies, and rumors.

For that reason alone, Michigan State fans aren’t buying it but if it is true, it could get messy.

The anonymous poster on the UteZone message board shared a “little Michigan nugget” and claimed that they spoke to a “certain QB’s dad” who claimed that Whittingham and the staff are not impressed with Underwood and are trying to convince Utah quarterback Devon Dampier to apply for a fifth year and transfer to Michigan in 2027.

Reading that instantly made me think of that Charlie Day meme where he’s mapping out an insane conspiracy on a bulletin board with newspaper clippings and string, trying to convince everyone to believe him.

This feels that crazy, but I’ll be the first to say I believed it from the get-go if it comes to fruition.

Michigan State fans would love a good Michigan QB controversy

A lot of Michigan fans felt uneasy when Underwood underwhelmed in the annual spring game, completing just 3-of-9 passes for 22 yards and he was sacked twice. He looked about as pedestrian, and even mediocre, as they come.

Still, you can’t put much stock into a spring game as it’s just a tiny snippet of what the coaching staff has already seen from the team.

Some Michigan fans have been lobbying for Tommy Carr to get a look. The four-star freshman who’s the younger brother of Notre Dame QB1 CJ Carr — who spurned Michigan — and the grandson of legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr looked really good in the spring game, completing 21-of-30 passes for 143 yards. National 247Sports analyst Hudson Standish even compared Carr to Connor Cook.

The Wolverines are also bringing in LSU quarterback transfer Colin Hurley who’s a former four-star.

While I don’t see it happening with Underwood essentially a lock to be the team’s starter throughout the season, Michigan State fans would love a good quarterback controversy in Ann Arbor.

As for the Utah message board conspiracy, I’m not buying it.
