Recruiting in the 2027 class is heating up for Michigan State as well as the rest of college basketball as rankings are updated almost daily and offers are starting to go out in droves.
Michigan State has offered a handful of recruits over the past month as Tom Izzo continues to expand his recruiting board. The Hall of Famer has offered a center, a handful of guards, and now he has officially extended an offer to one of the top small forwards in the class.
On Friday afternoon, Izzo offered one of the top 30 recruits in the nation, Asa Montgomery.

Montgomery hails from Powder Springs, Ga., where he happens to be one of the top prospects in the nation, already holding offers from Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Houston, Louisville, North Carolina, and Texas Tech, among about a dozen others.
Michigan State becomes the latest program to enter the race for Montgomery, but I’ve said this before: Izzo doesn’t offer guys unless he feels good about his chances.
That phrase seems obvious, but some coaches throw their hats into the ring dozens of times per class hoping that something is going to stick with 1-2 guys. Izzo is very methodical in the way he approaches recruiting and he’ll put in hours and hours of film and he’ll make several visits to watch a recruit before offering them. He’s very old school.
Which is why he always has teams full of guys that he can trust and who trust him.
Montgomery is an OKG (our kind of guy) which is why he received an offer. He’s the No. 27 overall recruit in the 2027 class as well as the seventh-best small forward, per 247Sports.
Tom Izzo’s plans for the 2027 class are clear
Izzo’s plans for the 2027 class were kept under wraps until summer kicked off and then he was spotted at several events across the country. He’s extended several offers but from the looks of it, he has a class structure in mind.
He definitely wants to start with a point guard. He’s offered guys like Jaxson Davis, Joshua Tyson, and Antonio Pemberton over the past month and he’s already locked in an official visit with Davis.
Outside of a point guard, he’s likely looking to add a big man. He’s offered rising top-100 power forward Jayon Connor as well as four-star center Jaydn Jenkins. I think it’s more likely that he targets a center over a power forward, but he could go for both. He’s also targeting 6-foot-9 center Kamsi Awaka.
Obviously there’s no order here, so he could go center and then point guard or even this last position first. The Montgomery offers shows that he’s looking for an elite wing, too. He’s offered three-star shooting guard Kingston Thomas already, but now he’s in on the 6-foot-7 Montgomery.
A point guard, a wing, and a center to replace Jeremy Fears (potentially), Coen Carr, and at least one post departure (likely Anton Bonke).
I’d love a Davis (or Pemberton), Montgomery, and Jenkins class.
