Tom Izzo joked with the media at a recent Michigan State event a couple of weeks ago about how he wasn’t quite ready to get the 2026-27 season started and wanted to enjoy the offseason a little more.

We should have known better than to believe that Izzo wants time away.

Right after saying that, his Spartans began summer workouts and he’s still doing plenty of recruiting. Izzo doesn’t exactly take time off, so when he said that he wanted the offseason to last a little longer, he probably wanted to focus on recruiting the 2027 class which currently has zero commitments.

On Sunday evening, the Hall of Fame head coach extended one of his first public offers in the 2027 class. Jadyn Jenkins is one of the best centers in the country for 2027 and now he’s the latest recruit to receiver an offer from Izzo.

Izzo was at Philly Live where he saw Jenkins dominating and decided to offer the talented big man from Warminster, Penn. The Spartans are now his 19th offer, per 247Sports.

Georgia, Penn State, Duke, Villanova, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Pitt, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech are among the teams showing interest in the 6-foot-10 big man. He’s been listed as a forward by some experts, but 247Sports has him ranked as the nation’s No. 6 center. The composite lists him as the No. 39 recruit in the class.

It’s about time Tom Izzo expanded his 2027 board

It’s no secret that Izzo likes to play his recruiting moves close to his chest. He doesn’t like to give too much away because when he offers someone, that’s usually followed by several other programs jumping into the race because they trust Izzo’s talent evaluation.

So far, the Spartans have just a handful of legitimate targets in the 2027 class, but Izzo needs to be casting a wider net as Jenkins is the only public target ranked in the top 50.

One name to watch is Kingston Thomas, the son of former Michigan State player David Thomas who is ranked just No. 142 nationally, but expect him to rise in the rankings soon. He’s also Michigan’s No. 2 prospect and an early favorite to win Mr. Basketball next year.

I’ve been a little underwhelmed by the lack of elite MSU targets in the 2027 class, but this just might be one of those cycles where there’s only room for 1-2 guys. Time will tell as more offers go out.
