We're getting to the point in Tom Izzo's career with Michigan State basketball that he's beginning to recruit former players' sons on a yearly basis.
This past season, he coached Jase Richardson, the son of Spartan legend Jason Richardson, and the freshman guard had a good enough first season with Michigan State that he entered the NBA draft and was selected in the first round by the Magic. He also coached the Davis Smith, the son of Steve Smith.
And now he's recruiting some other former Michigan State players' sons, though he did miss out on Richardson's other son, Jaxon, but he offered Mateen Cleaves' son, Mateen Cleaves Jr., who is a member of the 2028 recruiting class.
On Tuesday, another legacy offer went out, and this time it was to Kingston Thomas, the son of David Thomas who was on Izzo's 2000 national title team and was the Spartans' director of basketball operations for years.
Kingston plays at East Lansing High School, and has drawn some MAC interest from in-state programs like Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan. Bowling Green and Toledo are also on the radar, but Michigan State is his best offer yet. The 2027 wing prospect has yet to be rated by 247Sports or On3, but this may change soon.
If Thomas commits to Michigan State's 2027 class, he would join Richardson and Smith as the other two legacy recruits to suit up for Izzo. He may also end up being a future teammate of Cleaves Jr. -- that would be quite the poetic story if they help lead Izzo to title No. 2.
Something to monitor.
