Tom Izzo is facing another critical offseason at Michigan State. Well, most offseasons these days feel critical because we’re nearing the end of the coaching road for the Hall of Famer. Every season from here on out could be his last.

If he wants to go out on top, he needs to be building nothing but championship-caliber rosters. You could argue that the last two rosters fit that description, but clearly it wasn’t enough.

The 2026-27 team could be his best in a decade, but that all hinges on Jeremy Fears Jr. and his NBA draft decision over the next two weeks. Izzo still has a title-caliber roster and the next 1-2 years look pretty good as well, assuming he continues to recruit at a high level.

Over the weekend, a couple of elite 2027 point guard targets were revealed and another one just popped up, showing that Izzo’s not messing around.

On Sunday, Izzo’s staff checked in on a five-star point guard in the 2027 class. The Spartans were one of 10 programs in attendance for Cayden Daughtry’s game in Memphis.

There are obviously some big names involved already, too, like Duke, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, Louisville, and Alabama. Up-and-coming programs like Vanderbilt, Iowa, and Clemson were also in attendance at Daughtry’s game.

With this new target revealed, Michigan State has now shown interest in three elite point guards in the 2027 class. Four-star Jaxson Davis and five-star Nasir Anderson were the other two.

Daughtry is ranked the No. 17 overall recruit and No. 4 point guard in the 2027 class.

Point guard seems to be priority for Tom Izzo

With Fears flirting with the NBA and Carlos Medlock Jr. entering his freshman season, Izzo knows that he’s going to have to address the position so if he does get blindsided by another departure, he has a backup plan.

It feels like this whole Fears situation is causing Izzo to really hone in on the point guard spot because it’s not easy to find an elite one that’s both a great leader and player.

Anderson (the No. 7 overall recruit in 2027) told reporters that Michigan State is one of the schools reaching out most to him. He’s the No. 2 point guard in the 2027 class and he could be an absolute game-changer for the Spartans. He reminds me a little of Darius Acuff.

Davis is the No. 40 overall recruit and 11th-best point guard in the class, but compared to Anderson’s 6-foot-4 frame, he’s pretty small at 6-foot-0. Still, a ton of talent here.

Now Izzo is keeping an eye on Daughtry, the No. 4 point guard in 2027. That means he is now targeting at least three of the top 11 point guards in the upcoming class. He’s not willing to put all eggs in one basket yet, but he’s not going to settle in the next cycle.

You have to love seeing the recruiting aggression at such an important position.
