Michigan State fans heard a lot of trash talk from Michigan fans on Friday night about only beating Toledo by 10 points despite controlling the entire game, but that quickly backfired on Saturday night.
Michigan found itself in the middle of a dogfight with Western Michigan with time ticking away on a come-from-behind victory over the Broncos, but they looked like they had the upset in the bag. A final toss by Bryce Underwood out of the back of the end zone looked to be the cherry on top of one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, but the refs had a different idea.
Despite the clock clearly hitting triple zeroes and Western Michigan celebrating a massive upset, the refs got together and put one second back on the clock.
This has to go down as the worst reffing blunder of the season, and it’s just Week 1.

As you can see, the ball is still clearl in the air and the Western Michigan defender isn’t touching the ground yet when the clock hit zero and yet the refs got together and reversed the call.
If this wasn’t the most rigged ending of a college football game in recent memory, I don’t know what is. There’s not a Michigan fan in the world who can feel good about this win, especially since it shouldn’t have counted. Well, Michigan fans in attendance celebrated the win* by storming the field after beating the directional in-state program.

A storied program like Michigan storming the field after beating a MAC team? How the mighty have fallen. But hey, they can rest easy knowing that they won a game that they really didn’t.
The refs are going to have some serious explaining to do.
Michigan State has a real shot to beat Michigan this year
If we learned anything from Michigan’s season opener, it’s that Michigan State is going to have a real shot to beat the Wolverines this year because of how poor they looked.
Sure, Western Michigan might just be a really good MAC team, but the Wolverines were heavy favorites and there’s no reason that the Broncos should have been in that game. Michigan did play down to Western a little bit and they couldn’t seem to move the ball against that Bronco defense, but the Wolverines didn’t impress anyone in their opener.
Michigan State might have the edge at quarterback and the run game looked more encouraging that Michigan’s in the opener, but if the Spartans don’t cut down the opposing chunk plays, they’re not going to pull off that upset in Ann Arbor in November.
