It’s been a long season for Michigan State football fans, and the next two weeks can’t be over soon enough — at least on the field.

The Spartans are going to finish either 3-9 or 4-8 (most likely) as Iowa and Maryland await in the final two games. It’s been a disaster from start to finish, and it feels like the Jonathan Smith era may be coming to an end.

Unfortunately, that’s not a guarantee.

Smith spoke during his weekly presser on Monday, and he touched on some interesting topics, such as his relationship with new athletic director J Batt. He talked about how he speaks with Batt regularly, and that the two are “aligned” in a couple of important areas. That’s not exactly what Michigan State fans want to hear.

Michigan State fans want to see change happen, and that means a new head coach. Smith is just 8-14 over his first two seasons with Michigan State, and that’s not going to cut it. Fans want to see improvement, and that just hasn’t happened under Smith. The team has arguably gotten worse this year. That’s unacceptable.

But after seeing Luke Fickell get another year as well as Mike Locksley, it seems more likely that Batt goes the route of Wisconsin and Maryland gives Smith another season to prove himself.

Although I understand it, it’s just not going to sit well with fans. The Spartans have been mediocre since 2021, and it feels like the program needs a fresh start. That’s seemingly not going to happen with Smith at the helm.

However, it looks like he may be around in 2026.
