Jonathan Smith gives inexplicable answer to question about offensive line struggles

Following one of the ugliest losses (based on overall play) since taking over at Michigan State, Jonathan Smith had a lot of questions to answer.

The second-year head coach lost his second straight game of the season, and the team look wildly unprepared in the first quarter on Saturday afternoon, falling behind 14-0 in the first eight minutes against Nebraska — unacceptable after a bye week.

While the Spartans probably should have beaten Nebraska thanks to a strong defensive effort that included five sacks and an interception, the offense just couldn’t do much of anything.

A major reason for the offensive struggles? The offensive line, notably the tackle spots.

When asked about the offensive line after the game, Smith told the media that he didn’t see any glaring issues with the tackle spots. The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari correctly pointed out that he will see glaring issues when he watches film.

It was a tough game to watch because it was within reach, and it felt like the Spartans had a chance to really put the Cornhuskers away in the second half, but poor blocking led to some horrific throws and ineffective runs. Nebraska was able to smother the Spartans late in the second half despite coming in with one of the least effective pass rushes in the Big Ten.

For Smith to say he didn’t see the issues with the tackles was a little concerning. You’re the head coach, and you see your quarterback constantly running for his life, and the run game struggling for most of the game, yet you didn’t see any glaring issues in the trenches?

I’m honestly at a loss for words on this one. This answer felt a lot like Bobby Williams’ answer when he was asked if he lost the Michigan State locker room.

Hopefully the same result doesn’t happen. Smith’s seat is warming up.
