In case you’re unaware, Michigan State dominated Kentucky on Tuesday night. Obviously everyone is aware at this point, but the Spartans made a statement that was hard to ignore.
College hoops experts really didn’t want to give Michigan State credit after the Arkansas game, and some didn’t during the Kentucky game, but the Spartans have earned respect. And the point guard leading the team demands it.
Jeremy Fears Jr. has taken another step this season, and he looks like one of the best point guards in college basketball, even leading the nation in assists.
Michigan State is no stranger to having elite passers come through the program, and Fears is just the latest. But there’s a chance he could become the best. He’s proving that he has a knack for finding open guys, and he’s only getting better at it.
On Tuesday, he recorded 13 assists against Kentucky, just adding to his nation-leading total.
Those 13 assists also put him on an incredible record-breaking pace. He’s already ahead of Braden Smith’s pace through the first 52 games of his career, and he happens to be the nation’s top point guard.

Through the first 52 games of their careers:
Jeremy Fears - 277 assists
Braden Smith - 271 assists
Pretty insane pace. Fears has an extra year of eligibility from the medical redshirt coming too.
On top of that, he’s on pace to break the Big Ten record for assists, currently held by Cassius Winston who broke Mateen Cleaves’ record. He has almost three full seasons remaining in his career and he’s already up to nearly 300 assists. He only needs about 600 more to pass Winston. That record-breaking pace can’t be ignored, and the fact that he’s already ahead of Smith’s pace is incredible.
The Floor General is living up to his name.
