The name 'Jaden Akins' hadn't been thrown around much during NBA Summer League play as he played minimally, and when he did see action, he wasn't exactly lighting up the scoreboard.
The former Michigan State star wasn't expected to make much noise during Summer League action, especially while Jase Richardson was the one in the spotlight. He had to earn his minutes, and he eventually earned a role in his final game on Friday night.
Akins' work ethic has never been a question, but the coaching staff eased him into the action. He wrapped up Summer League action on Friday by playing 19 minutes.
Not only did he play 19 minutes, but he was one of just two Magic players in double figures in a blowout loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He scored 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting which isn't exactly a lights-out shooting performance from the Spartan guard, but he flashed his defense, too, leading the Magic in steals with three. He was also just one of five players on the roster who finished with a -1 +/- or better.

Akins proved that he's not afraid to take shots, and he's also a willing defender and rebounder from the guard position. He plays bigger than his frame which could get him far.
Unfortunately, I think he's going to have to fight for a two-way contract. He may not earn it with the Magic, but we've seen some guys get one from other teams when the Summer League concludes.
This performance may not have been enough, but Akins gave it his best shot and looked like he belonged on the same floor with some other pros. He has the potential to eventually earn a roster spot and you know he's not going to stop working until that happens.
