In the transfer portal era, it's been fun to look at former Michigan State football players and see how they've fared since leaving East Lansing.
Some guys have fizzled out and never really caught on with their new schools, while others (Germie Bernard, Sam Leavitt) have been excelling and leading their respective teams.
Well, we can probably add another former Spartan to the list of excelling transfers.
Khary Crump, who was known most for the Michigan tunnel incident while at Michigan State, has been one of the nation's top cornerbacks through four weeks. In fact, he has one of the 10 best catch rates in the country, according to Cam Mellor.
Lowest catch rate allowed, FBS CBs:
— Cam Mellor (@CamMellor) September 22, 2025
1) Kelley Jones, Miss State: 14.3%
2) Brandon Finney Jr., Oregon: 20.0%
2) Dezz Ricks, Texas A&M: 20.0%
4) Mansoor Delane, LSU: 22.2%
5) Colton Hood, Tennessee: 23.5%
6) Khary Crump, Rice: 27.8%
7) Xavier Scott, Illinois: 28.6%

I bet you never expected to see Crump on a list like this with some of the nation's best cornerbacks. He has been as lockdown as they come this season, allowing just a 27.8% catch rate which means only that percentage of balls thrown his way are caught. That's not too shabby.
While that is an impressive mark, Crump has only faced Louisiana, Houston, Prairie View A&M, and Charlotte. And I doubt he'll get a whole lot of run in his next game as the Owls face run-heavy Navy.
Still, it's cool to see the former Spartan doing well after playing just eight games over three seasons with Michigan State. He was always buried on the depth chart and was suspended for the tunnel incident in 2022, so his career was more down than up in East Lansing.
Add Crump to the list of former Spartans who could flirt with the NFL. Never thought I'd say that.
