Michigan State has now seen multiple former players hit the transfer portal after a Colorado judge ruled that recently-graduated seniors from the 2022 recruiting class are eligible for the upcoming season.
First, it was reported that Jaxon Kohler would be seeking another year of elibility and now Tre Holloman is officially joining that mix.
The former Michigan State sixth man from the 2024-25 Big Ten title season has announced that he’s in the transfer portal and he’s exploring all of his fifth-year options. He previously entered his name into the portal before the Colorado judge’s ruling and before the NBA draft, but he’s made it official now that fifth year players are eligible for the 2026-27 season — as of right now.

Now that Holloman is officially in the portal, he can search for a new home before the fall semester begins. He was waiting in limbo before this court decision and now he can plan for one final season of college basketball and get a re-do on his senior year.
For those who have somehow forgotten already, Holloman transferred from Michigan State following a Big Ten title season and before his senior year to play for Will Wade and NC State.
You can bet that he was hoping for a do-over.
The storylines for Michigan State next March could be fun
If Kohler does decide to transfer somewhere like Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, or BYU, there’s a good chance that he’ll be on a national title contender next March. If that’s the case, he’ll be on a team that could be in Michigan State‘s bracket as a roadblock in the way of Tom Izzo’s second title.
The same can be said for Holloman. He’ll likely receive a ton of interest in the portal considering he’s an experience guard, former Big Ten champ, and he’s started on two power conference teams.
The Selection Committee seemingly likes putting Michigan State in the same bracket as Duke every single year but they also live for the storylines. Michigan State vs. Duke would be a fun storyline which is why I think that always seems to happen, but they could decide to do what they did with Foster Loyer during the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Loyer played for Michigan State the year before and the Selection Committee liked the idea of pinning him against his former team in round one.
Fortunately the Spartans escaped 74-73 in the first round and avoided what would have been a disaster for fans, losing to a former oft-criticized backup point guard.
Don’t be shocked when Kohler or Holloman are in the same region as Michigan State next March.
