Former 4-star in-state Michigan State EDGE target commits to Big Ten rival

It’s crazy how fast things can change in recruiting. One minute, you could have a visit locked in with one of the top recruits from your own backyard and the next, he’s cancelling the visit and committing to your rival.

That’s exactly what happened with Michigan State and four-star defensive end Myles Smith.

The Farmington, Mich., native was originally set to visit Michigan State this weekend, but he cancelled that trip a couple of weeks ago and replaced it with an Oklahoma official. The Sooners worked to get that visit flipped but unfortunately for them, they didn’t stand much of a chance.

After visiting Indiana on May 15, Smith worked quickly to name his top schools and earlier this week, he scheduled a commitment date for Thursday with programs like Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, and Oklahoma on his list along with the Hoosiers. The writing was on the wall that it was likely the program that he just visited landing his commitment and he made it official.

Smith went from looking seriously at Michigan State to completely replacing the Spartans with Oklahoma to committing to Indiana before taking the rest of his official visits.

Recruitments can change momentum rather quickly during the NIL era.

It’s actually crazy to think that Michigan State was involved as recently as three weeks ago. He’ll now be playing for the Spartans’ Big Ten rival and they’ll battle it out for the Old Brass Spittoon.

Michigan State is facing a huge official visit weekend regardless

Although Smith and fellow four-star defensive line target Marvin Nguetsop canceled their May 29 official visits and won’t be playing in East Lansing next year, the Spartans are still hosting several four-star targets this weekend.

Four-stars Caleb Johnson, Reinaldo Perez, and Anthony Cartwright will be on campus over the weekend and Pat Fitzgerald will hope to be on commit watch with at least one of those guys.

On top of that, Fitzgerald is also bringing in three-star in-state receiver Don Spillers who I believe will be on commit watch and there may be 1-2 more surprise visitors on campus. One of them is a reported four-star Ohio-based athlete and the other may be an in-state target.

Even without Smith and Nguetsop, Fitzgerald is staring down the most important official visits weekend that Michigan State football has seen probably since Mel Tucker.

It’s fun to be able to care about football recruiting again — for now.
