Tom Izzo has reassured Michigan State basketball fans that he doesn’t plan on retiring any time soon, and he’s already said that he’s going to be around for a while still.

The Hall of Fame head coach has been in charge of the program for 30 years, and he’s already 70 years old, turning 71 in January, but he feels like he’s gotten a second wind. He’s now more motivated than ever to win that second national title, and many believe he can do it as soon as this season.

Even if he did win it all this season, he would be back next year because he’s not the kind of coach to be content with winning a title — he will just want more.

Izzo is hungry to win that second national title, and with the way he’s been coaching and recruiting over the past couple of seasons, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see it happen soon.

Still, he is almost 71 and there has to be some sort of plan in place for when he does retire.

A name that has popped up on numerous occasions as a potential Izzo replacement is Spartan legend and NBA champion Draymond Green.

While Green would have no coaching experience if he were to replace Izzo, and he’s still playing in the NBA, it’s a name that Spartan fans have been bringing up for a couple of years. Green is a genius basketball mind and he would be one of those new-age coaches who would be able to recruit at a high level because of their professional success and young age.

It’s a name to keep an eye on, but Draymond has laughed off the idea in the past.

Not anymore.

The idea of coaching at Michigan State is growing on Draymond

During a recent podcast episode, Green said that he hasn’t always shrugged off the idea of coaching at Michigan State and replacing Izzo, but the older he gets, the more intriguing it is.

This was a relatively surprising answer because Green never really considered this an option, but the more he gets asked about it, the more he warms up to it.

Draymond said his answer to that question used to be an emphatic “no” but the more he thinks about it and looks at the college landscape, it’s no longer a definitive “no”. He also said he could see himself coaching Michigan State one day because he loves the school and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help his alma mater out.

We can dream, right?
