Bruce Pearl's sudden retirement on Monday afternoon came as a surprise to many. He was a coaching buddy of Tom Izzo, and watching a legendary coach who's younger than the Spartan Hall of Famer call it a career got a lot of Michigan State fans thinking.
Is Izzo next?
That was the first thought on a lot of minds after hearing about Pearl hanging it up after making a Final Four with Auburn and leading the program to the top of the SEC in his 11th season. Unfortunately, his Tigers fell short and another SEC team won the national title, but he was right there and had a good enough team.
Izzo, on the other hand, was eliminated in the Elite Eight by Pearl's Tigers. Little did anyone know that would be the final matchup between the two legendary head coaches.
With Izzo starting the year off with the team's first practice on Monday, everyone was curious about what his vibe would be. It turns out he may have taken a drink from the fountain of youth.
During his presser, he didn't sound like a coach who was even considering the idea of retirement, talking about where the Final Four will be in a couple of years, and just exuding a ton more energy. The "is Izzo next?" question seemed to be answered emphatically by his energetic presser.
Tom Izzo sounded like he’s ready to coach for 10+ more years at his presser today😂

It's rare to see Izzo smiling and talking up the media, saying that they deserve better home games (though he did cover his eyes when he said it). He just looks and sounds like a coach who got a second wind, and that's something that should terrify the rest of the country.
With all of these legendary coaches retiring suddenly, Izzo is only getting stronger and more motivated to win that second national title. He's right there.
And it sounds like he'll have at least a few years to accomplish that.
