Charles Brantley’s reason for transferring back to MSU makes complete sense

The Michigan State cornerback was homesick.

Charles Brantley is no stranger to the transfer portal. After a strong start to his Michigan State career, he entered the portal before deciding to withdraw his name and return to East Lansing to play for Jonathan Smith in 2024.

Brantley broke out and decided to maximize on that, transferring to a team that was going to be in contention for a national title. Unfortunately, he didn’t see much of the field.

The former Spartan cornerback decided to transfer back to Michigan State this offseason, and his reason for returning makes complete sense: he wanted to come “home”.

Pat Fitzgerald talked about Brantley’s decision to return and how excited he is to have the veteran cornerback back in East Lansing, citing his great attitude.

”Ecstatic that he’s here.”

That’s the type of quote about a veteran player who transferred back to the program that will make fans buy all the way back in on Brantley. He kind of ruffled some feathers when he transferred to Miami last offseason, but his return has been welcomed by just about everyone, especially when you hear Fitzgerald gush over him and what he brings to the locker room.

You can’t fault Brantley for trying to make a business decision — a-la Keon Coleman — but you also can’t fault him for wanting to come “home” when that decision didn’t work out.

Charles Brantley is starting his redemption tour

After leaving the program following a personally successful 2024 season, Brantley burned some bridges in East Lansing and fans soured on him because he entered the portal again and unlike the last time, he decided to leave. Now he’s back to prove that Michigan State is home and he can win everyone back by replicating his 2022 and 2024 seasons.

Brantley is going to push for a starting cornerback job, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him there to begin the year. He’s proven to be a capable lockdown corner in East Lansing, totaling 18 pass breakups and five interceptions during his time at Michigan State.

Some heroics would also win Michigan State fans back, if they aren’t already on his side. He was a hero in the Michigan game during his freshman year and he had multiple pick-sixes with the Spartans. More of that would absolutely complete his redemption tour.

That, and re-building that NFL draft stock and being selected in 2027.
