Before Saturday’s Nebraska vs. Michigan State football game, the injury report showed that the Spartans would be down a number of starters, including two surprises on defense.

Just 16 minutes into the game, another name was added to the list of injuries.

Unfortunately, it was the most important name on the team: Aidan Chiles.

The junior quarterback was leading a long drive down the field into Nebraska territory and he even got the Spartans inside the 10. Then, dropping back to try and get the Spartans on the board, he was met by several rushing defenders and very little blocking, and they took him to the ground — hard.

Chiles sat up but was clearly hurt. He was able to leave the field on his own power, but he was forced to check into the medical tent after the injury.

Chiles didn’t have time to escape the bull rush and toss the ball away, but he was swallowed up by the pressure and taken to the ground. He had to leave the game after the play and his backup, Alessio Milivojevic, threw a touchdown pass just a couple of plays later.

Fortunately, Chiles returned on the following drive for the Spartans, but we’ll see just how serious this injury was because he looked to be in some serious pain after the hit. He looked alright on the ensuing drive, completing a 14-yard pass, but he then overthrew Chrishon McCray by a mile on a deep ball.

This will be something to monitor as the game progresses.
