5 more Michigan State football players who could enter the transfer portal
Following a disappointing 2024 season, Michigan State football will likely be hitting the transfer portal hard under Jonathan Smith to make sure it doesn't miss another bowl game in 2025.
It's been three years since the Spartans went bowling and that's just far too long.
Now, Michigan State is starting its offseason earlier than expected and it will know who is deciding to leave the program and who it can target in the transfer portal before other teams who are participating in bowl season.
The first domino fell on Tuesday afternoon as Ken Talley hit the portal. There will be plenty more to come and here are the guys who I believe could be next to transfer out.
Note: This is based solely on playing time in 2024 and/or coaching changes, not talent.
1. Antonio Gates Jr., WR
Is Antonio Gates Jr. still on the roster? That's been the question on a lot of fans' minds this season as the sophomore receiver went from preseason praise from Jonathan Smith and Courtney Hawkins to playing in just two games and catching four passes for 49 yards.
It was a major step in the wrong direction for Gates after catching five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown as a freshman and with the playing time decreasing, this would make a ton of sense.
I'll be honest, I was really high on Gates heading into the season and I thought he was going to have a large role on offense and it looked like that might be the case early on, but he struggled to see the field and was essentially non-existent after the first few weeks of the season.
Gates flirted with the portal last offseason so I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again.
