Pat Fitzgerald’s first recruiting class at Michigan State isn’t exactly looking like a group that’s going to single-handedly turn the program back in the right direction, but it’s a start.

The 2027 class is ranked somewhere in the 50-60 range and while that will give the rival fans some ammunition for trash talk, things can change in an instant on the recruiting trail. If Michigan State happens to have a huge 2026 season, exceeding expectations, you can bet that not only the 2027 class but the 2028 class will skyrocket.

The only difference right now is the fact that the 2027 class is likely narrowing its list of targets down as spots fill up. The Spartans have 15 commits and probably 5-10 open spots left.

As for the 2028 class, the possibilities are endless.

Four-star in-state wide receiver Mylan Griggs agrees. He shared a forecast about Michigan State football recruiting that Spartan fans are going to love to hear.

A top recruit from the state of Michigan believes that Michigan State recruiting could go “off the charts” should be a good sign that Fitzgerald is building the right relationships.

Michigan State is clearly pushing for Griggs who’s teammates with five-star Spartan target Antijuan Wilkes and the two could end up convincing one another to pick the green and white. Judging by their quotes regarding Michigan State over the past couple of weeks, the Spartans are very much in it for both Griggs and Wilkes.

Griggs is the No. 299 overall recruit and No. 7 in-state prospect in 2028, per 247Sports.

What ‘off the charts’ could look like for Michigan State

What does “off the charts” really mean for Michigan State recruiting?

I think that, like Fitzgerald has already said, Michigan State is a sleeping giant. The Spartans were one of the top programs for NFL talent during the Mark Dantonio era and although he recruited modestly, many top recruits wanted to play for the Hall of Fame head coach. He made Michigan State cool again by instilling toughness and a blue-collar attitude.

Michigan State has since lost its way, but we got a taste of “off the charts” recruiting under Mel Tucker. He was able to get elite talent to campus and have four and five-star recruits at least interested, but he couldn’t close the deal when he needed to.

Fitzgerald is also recruiting modestly like Dantonio did, but he has to out of necessity. Michigan State just isn’t an attractive place for top recruits right now but it won’t take much to change that.

That’s what Griggs was alluding to.

“Off the charts” recruiting would likely mean regular top 25 classes and 4-5 of the top 10 in-state recruits picking Michigan State every cycle. That level of recruiting would get Michigan State back to the top.
