Recruiting has been relatively slow for Michigan State football this spring, but with official visit season approaching, that should change.
While the days of bringing in high four and five-star recruits for official visits over the summer with fancy cars and goats on the field for photo ops are over (for now), Jonathan Smith is trying to get his roster set up for the future and that means targeting more three-star guys with chips on their shoulders. Mark Dantonio showed us that this strategy can work.
Every now and then, however, a four-star will enter the mix and consider Michigan State strongly.
Earlier this week, that happened in the form of four-star in-state prospect Kory Amachree from Haslett, Mich. He posted a top six last week which included Michigan State, Harvard, Kansas, Pitt, Indiana, and Duke. On Tuesday, he announced a commitment date.
Amachree will make his college decision on Friday, May 23, at his high school. He'll have six hats on the table and he'll do the classic hate decision which usually doesn't go well for the Spartans (we've had some bad luck over the years) but with him being local, it feels like Michigan State might be in a good spot.
Word on the street is that Michigan State feels good about where it stands but there's some chatter that Kansas feels the same way. The 247Sports staff actually placed a crystal ball for Kansas to land him on Tuesday afternoon. This could be a two-team battle.
Amachree is the No. 351 overall recruit in the class as well as the 24th-best running back and sixth-best Michigan-based prospect, according to 247Sports.
Michigan State is hoping for some good news on Friday.
