2. The freshmen all showed positive flashes

All the freshmen — minus Gehrig Normand — played extensively on Thursday night and they looked really solid. They probably played more than they would have if Michigan State had won the opener against James Madison. Tom Izzo wants to see what he has.

Jeremy Fears played well despite scoring just two points. He did have five assists and no turnovers, showing that he’s comfortable with the ball in his hands.

Xavier Booker was probably the most surprisingly impressive of the trio on Thursday, scoring four points with two rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. He showed that motor that was in question and we got to see flashes of what he can bring to the table in the future.

Lastly, Coen Carr was solid but not quite as impressive as he was in the opener. He finished with three points, three rebounds, and a steal. He only took one shot.
