This is another one of those “can’t settle” hires that would cause fans to revolt.

Heck, this entire list is filled with guys who would be considered “settling” after searching for big names and having enough time to compile a real list and interview candidates.

Mike Tressel was a really good defensive coordinator for Michigan State from 2015-2019 before he was demoted to safeties coach in 2020 under the new coaching staff. He decided to leave for a promotion at Cincinnati where he was the defensive coordinator under Luke Fickell and then followed him to Wisconsin in the same role which is where he currently resides.

While Tressel has had success as an assistant in East Lansing, I just can’t see him taking over a program for the first time in his career and turning it around. Even if he is familiar with Michigan State. It just wouldn’t happen right away.

Plus, recruits wouldn’t be drawn to East Lansing with Tressel in charge because he’s so unproven. You have to go out and get a guy who has proven himself as a head coach.

That’s my biggest knock on Tressel.
