3. The Richmond Spiders have upset an FBS team before

Richmond’s shining moment was when they beat Power Five (a very loose term for a team that went 2-10) Virginia Cavaliers in 2016, 37-20.

While that Virginia team was no great shakes, it goes to show that FCS teams can pull the upset every once in a while. The Spiders offense racked up 524 yards of offense with the defense forced a whopping four turnovers.

Yes it is rare, but schools like Richmond draw inspiration from games like that when taking on other Power Five schools. While Michigan State can afford to make a few mistakes, it’s important to not let them compound and give the Spiders any momentum or worse, hope.
