Michigan State football vs. Conference USA

There are only five teams from Conference USA that Michigan State has never faced and one of them will bring back bad memories from the hardwood.

FIU: There have been some big-name coaches in charge of FIU over the years (Mario Cristobal, Butch Davis) but the program is just old enough to drink (became an FBS football team in 2002). There just haven’t been a ton of opportunities for Michigan State to face the Panthers.

Liberty: Hugh Freeze just helped put Liberty on the map over the past few years, but the Flames have only been in the FBS since 2018 so this one isn’t much of a surprise. It would be a fun future matchup, however.

Middle Tennessee: I know, this is a school that you probably wish you never heard about for the rest of your life, but the Spartans haven’t faced the Blue Raiders — in football. Let’s just forget that they have a basketball team, OK?

New Mexico State: Not exactly a Group of Five power, New Mexico State has played in just five bowl games in school history and only two since 1960. Former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill is entering his second year with the Aggies so that’s the only reason I’d be interested in this matchup.

UTEP: I’m kind of surprised Michigan State has never faced UTEP as the Miners have been around for over 100 years (their first season was in 1914). But alas, no matchups have happened.
