Mel Tucker and Michigan State football have been hard at work this month so far. The head coach and his staff have been working to land some key pieces in their 2024 recruiting class with official visit season in full swing.

And it looks to be paying off.

Some key targets have been on campus over the past two weeks but the first weekend of official visits has yielded no commitments thus far. Weekend No. 2 might be different.

In fact, crystal balls have been flooding in for Michigan State to land one of the top safety targets on its board for 2024. Reggie Powers, a three-star from Ohio, was once considered an Ohio State lean, but Michigan State has seemingly taken a commanding lead, picking up crystal ball predictions from Corey Robinson, Justin Thind, and Steven Wiltfong, among others.

This would be a huge recruiting win for Tucker and Co. over the Buckeyes for a Midwest gem.

Powers is ranked the No. 580 overall recruit and 57th-best safety in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Michigan State football getting back into Ohio?

As we’ve seen over the past couple of classes, Tucker is much more of a national recruiter than Mark Dantonio was and while that’s a strength, it’s good to not forget about the Midwest, specifically Ohio.

The state of Ohio has been kind to Michigan State over the years and Dantonio took advantage of the gold mine of talent down there. And now it looks like Tucker is following suit.

It would be nice to see Tucker continuing to recruit nationally while still keep a strong presence in Ohio. Powers would be a nice way to keep that going.
