Michigan State football: Grading the Spartans’ 2023 recruiting class
Receivers/Tight ends: B
This is one of those groups that when we look back will have earned a much higher grade.
Brennan Parachek helps the grade out as the only four-star that fits this position group. The four-star tight end from Dexter, Mich., is ranked the No. 339 overall recruit in the class and he’s No. 18 at the position. Michigan State got a really good tight end of the future and pair him with Jack Nickel in a couple of years and that’s a really good one-two punch.
At receiver, Michigan State aimed for more of a low-risk, high-reward type of class.
There weren’t many four-star targets at the position in the class because receiver isn’t exactly a position of need with a loaded room coming back next year (though the loss of Germie Bernard hurts).
Aziah Johnson is a speed threat at receiver and he was one of the later additions in the class. He’s the No. 918 overall recruit in the class and the 70th-best athlete out of Virginia. The other receiver addition is Jaelen Smith, a rising three-star from Texas. I really like his potential and he is almost surely going to outperform his recruiting ranking of No. 937.
Receivers have potential, especially with Courtney Hawkins coaching them.
