If you’ve followed Michigan State football since the early days of the Mark Dantonio era, you would know that the program has been built on landing under-the-radar talent.

Especially defensive backs.

Just look at the stars the Spartans have had in the defensive backfield during the glory days of Dantonio on what would be called the ‘No Fly Zone’. Guys like Darqueze Dennard, Trae Waynes, Kurtis Drummond, Josiah Scott, and even Tony Lippett (as a two-way player) starred in East Lansing. All of those guys flew under the radar as recruits.

Mel Tucker is looking to carry on that tradition of finding an under-the-radar defensive back late in the process as he offered Philipp Davis on Jan. 3. He was an unranked recruit essentially only hearing from Toledo during his recruiting process.

But Tucker may have found himself a diamond in the rough.

Davis would be a great late addition for Michigan State football

The Spartans’ defensive backfield has been a weakness over the past few years and Tucker is looking to change that. While Davis isn’t the kind of prospect who will come in and play right away, he’s a late riser in the recruiting ranks who has the look of a player with sky-high potential who has barely scratched the surface yet.

Davis was unranked when Michigan State offered in early January and he was given three stars in the latest composite rankings and he’s now rated as a .8650 three-star prospect. He’s a top 1,000 player with essentially no interest from other programs but it looks like Michigan State found itself a hidden gem.

He’d be a perfect signing day addition for the Spartans.

It looks like Michigan State is closing in on him as the Spartans received a crystal ball to land him this week and signing day is Wednesday. This is how you close a class.
