This was an easy pick for me just because I’m firmly on the Katin Houser bandwagon. Sure, Payton Thorne could win the starting job next season but Houser is, at the very least, going to make it an interesting battle.

Thorne had a disappointing 2022 season in which he saw most of his numbers dip while his interceptions rose. He made too many silly mistakes that you would have expected a freshman, like Houser, to make and that’s just unacceptable for a veteran quarterback. I think the staff needs to give Houser a serious look this spring and Mel Tucker even admitted it’s an open competition.

As a former Elite 11 quarterback and four-star flip from Boise State, Houser has the tools to become one of the best young passers in the Big Ten in 2023 if he lives up to the hype.

I have high hopes for Houser because of his tools and his size and I think that another year in Jay Johnson’s system is only going to make him an even bigger threat to steal the starting job from Thorne next season. If he does, he’ll be a legitimate star.
