Michigan State football pushing for another 2023 class RB?
Recruiting never stops for Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker and the rest of his staff. He’s been very vocal about recruiting 24/7 and he’s lived up to that claim.
While the running back position hasn’t gone quite as planned for Tucker and Co. since arriving in East Lansing a couple of years ago (outside of the portal, obviously), they have been aggressive in recruiting some of the top talent at the position.
Kedrick Reescano was a Spartan for a while until a surprise decommitment and eventual pledge to Ole Miss on signing day. Instead, the Spartans ended up with three-star Jaelon Barbarin.
But could the Spartans be adding another back from the 2023 class?
According to a tweet from 247Sports Miami recruiting expert Gaby Urrutia (with an attached VIP article), Michigan State is in the running for another top running back in the 2023 class.
This would be a nice late get for the Spartans who already have one back in the class and two from the transfer portal. The room would be loaded as well as built for the future.
Simpkins, an Under Armour All-American, will reportedly decide between the Spartans and UCF after taking a look at Michigan State next month. Does the coaching staff want to address the position one more time via the 2023 class or in the portal?
We’ll find out soon.
Michigan State football’s running back room being built up
After losing Kenneth Walker III last offseason and potentially Elijah Collins and/or another back to the portal (purely speculation) this offseason, the running back room has been under construction.
Jalen Berger was a nice pick-up last offseason and Jarek Broussard was supposed to be solid but struggled in a Spartan uniform. But with Broussard gone, the Spartans had to go out and find a nice backup for Berger or even a guy who could push for the starting job. They got that in UConn transfer Nathan Carter.
They also landed a fast-rising three-star prospect in Barbarin late in the process, but landing Simpkins would be a nice get late in the 2023 class process.
Would Simpkins start immediately? Probably not, but he would be a potential starter a year or two down the line with a high ceiling. He doesn’t have elite speed, but there’s a reason he holds offers from Arkansas, Louisville, Maryland, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, UCF, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a talented back.
The Spartans’ running back room would look really good with the addition of Simpkins.
