Michigan State football: Has recent recruiting hot streak eased concerns?
Mel Tucker is red-hot right now. The Michigan State football coach is coming off a 5-7 season which obviously fell way short of expectations after starting the season ranked, but he’s quickly working to correct the issues his team had this year.
One way to fix those issues is by recruiting at a high level. And Tucker is doing just that.
Over the past week, Tucker has added to his 2023 class with three-star receiver Aziah Johnson, three-star running back Jaelon Barbarin, three-star cornerback Sean Brown, and four-star quarterback Sam Leavitt. His class, which lost two commitments last weekend, went from 10 pledges to 14, rising from No. 47 nationally to No. 27.
Not only did he add to the 2023 class, but he also landed transfers in the form of kicker Jonathan Kim (North Carolina), tight end Tyneil Hopper (Boise State), tight end Jaylan Franklin (Wisconsin), and cornerback Semar Melvin (Wisconsin). He’s addressed a number of needs.
And he’s not nearly done.
Has Michigan State football recruiting eased concerns?
Fans were in full-blown “sky is falling” mode a few days ago. The Spartans lost two 2023 commits and Germie Bernard entered the transfer portal, but a recent hot streak has calmed some nerves.
Coming off a 5-7 season and losing some key recruits and a potential future star at receiver didn’t make too many people happy, but Tucker has gone out and hit almost every positional need and he’s in the running for Keyshawn Blackstock, a four-star JUCO lineman, as well as four-star running back Kedrick Reescano.
Has this recruiting hot streak eased concerns? I think so. Sure, there will be some skeptics until Tucker can bring in a top 25 recruiting class and some day one impact transfers, but this past week has gone a long way in terms of getting fans to buy back in.
