Michigan State football picked up a much-needed commitment on Wednesday afternoon in the form of three-star receiver Aziah Johnson.

After losing two commitments over the weekend from Colton Hood and Johnathan Slack, this was the news that would help calm fans’ nerves. Well, it would at least help as the Spartans will be looking to land a few more 2023 recruits before early signing day.

Johnson may not be the highest-rated recruit (No. 80 athlete nationally) but he is one of those guys who you can’t just look at the rankings of, you have to watch his highlights.

He’s a fairly raw recruit who hasn’t played a ton of football. But his speed can be a difference-maker.

Michigan State needs guys who can get open by just burning guys deep and Johnson seems to possess that home-run threat ability. There’s a reason South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina were pushing hard for him.

Pair him with a freak athlete like Keon Coleman, a veteran like Tre Mosley, and some young guys like Tyrell Henry and Antonio Gates Jr. and you have a dynamic receiving corps.

Michigan State football’s 2023 class on the rise

Admittedly, was a rough weekend for Michigan State football recruiting with the losses of Hood and Slack, dropping the Spartans to No. 47 nationally. But after landing Johnson, they’re up to No. 43 and they look to rise even more if they can land guys like Sam Leavitt, Sean Brown, and Keyshawn Blackstock.

This is a nice class that Mel Tucker is putting together but it’s getting a ton of hate because it’s not exactly the biggest group.

Quality over quantity seems to be the approach here.
