Michigan State football trending with rising Wazzu QB commit Sam Leavitt
Before his senior season began, not many people were talking about Sam Leavitt. The three-star quarterback just committed to Washington State before his last year of high school ball in Oregon and he hadn’t quite broken out yet. That changed as he had a monster senior year, and now Michigan State football has taken notice.
Leavitt has jumped a few hundred spots in the 247Sports Composite over the past week thanks to his nearly 4,000 yards of offense during his senior season and SpartanTailgate believes he will be a four-star prospect by signing day.
On Wednesday, the Spartans extended an offer to the rising three-star from Portland.
Jay Johnson paid him a visit on Tuesday, the Spartans offered on Wednesday, and Leavitt scheduled an official for the weekend of Dec. 9. Things seem to be moving quickly here.
Michigan State football may have found a hidden gem
Leavitt’s rise in the composite rankings shouldn’t be much of a surprise given his monster season at West Linn (Ore.) where he passed for 3,065 yards and 36 touchdowns while completing 70 percent of his passes and rushing for another 720 yards and eight touchdowns on his way to a state title and 12-1 season, according to 247Sports.
Going from the 750-800 range all the way up to the top 500 nationally over the past couple of weeks is a good sign of his growth and it seems like he’d be a great fit in East Lansing.
Many are excited about the future with Katin Houser at quarterback. And, like Houser experienced, Leavitt’s is rising late in his high school career. This could be another hidden gem discovered by the staff late in the process. He would replace the recently-decommitted Bo Edmundson.
If the Spartans can’t land Dante Moore (it’s looking that way), Leavitt would be a heck of a backup plan.
