It’s the middle of football season and that’s supposed to take center stage, but Tom Izzo is working extremely hard on his 2024 Michigan State basketball class and this is a huge weekend for that group.

The Spartans are hosting a couple of top targets, but none may be as important as four-star (borderline five-star) big man James Brown from Chicago.

According to reports, the four-star from Chicago will be on campus this weekend for an official visit which comes just a week after he released his top 10 and included the Spartans.

Michigan State will be battling it out with Howard, Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Notre Dame, Duke, and Eastern Michigan for his services.

This is a big development, however.

Michigan State basketball looking good here

The fact that Brown immediately scheduled an official visit to East Lansing just a week after his top 10 was released is a good sign and that probably means the Spartans are in good shape.

Brown is close with 2023 four-star point guard commit Jeremy Fears and the two have reportedly talked about playing together at Michigan State. They’ve known each other since about second grade and the two would make for a heck of a duo in the green and white.

This could jumpstart the 2024 class for Michigan State. Fears was the first pledge of 2023 and it happened during last basketball season so why not have his good friend become the first of 2024 during this basketball campaign?

We do know that Tom Izzo will have plenty of playing time to sell to Brown in the post.

Brown is ranked the No. 27 overall recruit and sixth-best center in the class. He’s a borderline five-star prospect. Having him take in Midnight Madness on Friday and the Ohio State game on Saturday was a big brain move by Izzo.
