Mel Tucker was disappointed in many things from Michigan State football’s season-opening win over WMU, including the cramps.

The standard is the standard. Mel Tucker has reiterated that phrase pertaining to the new era of Michigan State football under his leadership.

And nothing is safe from criticism coming from the head coach.

That includes cramping up. No, that’s not a typo.

Multiple players cramped up in the opening win over Western Michigan and Tucker was not pleased with that because he felt like it meant his players weren’t hydrated enough.

Tucker went on to say that having players cramp up in East Lansing in September is just unacceptable and he takes it seriously. You love to see this kind of intensity from a head coach, even over something as seemingly uncontrollable as a cramp — Tucker wants to have control over that and everything else on the field.

Once again, the Spartans’ head coach is just as intense about cramping up as he is about playing to the whistle on every snap. There’s no in-between with Tucker.

Much to the delight of fans, Tucker also stated that he was disappointed with how his team played against the Broncos. Winning by 22 points and being disappointed about the sloppiness on the field is a very Nick Saban-like mentality and you really love to see it.

Michigan State’s standards have been raised under Tucker and he’s not going to be content with a lopsided win over Western Michigan. He wants his team to actually play like they deserved to win by 30-40 points and not leave 17-20 points on the field with turnovers and sloppy mistakes.

We should see massive improvements — and fewer cramps — in Week 2 against Akron.
