3 reasons Michigan State football could win the Big Ten in 2022
1. The Spartans have a reliable quarterback
Unlike some other teams that might be vying for conference supremacy, Michigan State has a reliable quarterback heading into the season. There is no competition for QB1.
Payton Thorne was a first-year starter in 2021 and managed to break the single-season passing touchdowns record with 27 and passed for over 3,200 yards. He’s still somehow flying under the radar and that’s going to change when he takes the field this fall.
Some rival fans are saying he was only good because Kenneth Walker III took pressure off of him, but he thrived in obvious passing situations. If the line improves, he’s going to pick defenses apart.
Thorne is as reliable as they come and makes almost all the throws with relative ease. I could probably count on one hand the number of poor throws that Thorne had last year where he was just looking at something totally off and they probably mostly came from the first half of the Peach Bowl, the Nebraska game, and the first quarter against Michigan.
Other than that, he was really good and he figures to be even better in 2022 with the respect of his teammates and improved accuracy.
Every conference title contender or favorite has a really good and reliable QB1.
