Just days after taking an official visit to East Lansing, Gehrig Normand is ready to commit, but will it be to Michigan State basketball?

Remember when the “Tom Izzo is washed” crowd was deafening?

Well, after one of the best recruiting weeks of his career, he’s quickly quieting the doubters and getting Michigan State basketball fans to believe again.

Over the weekend, he landed five-star big man Xavier Booker over Indiana and Purdue, and on Tuesday, four-star wing Gehrig Normand is a strong candidate to commit to Michigan State. He took an official visit over the weekend just a week after receiving an offer and all signs are pointing to him becoming a Spartan.

Normand, an athletic sharpshooter from Texas, took official visits to Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Wisconsin and holds over 20 offers, but Michigan State quickly moved after Devin Royal was projected to land with Ohio State. In previous years, Izzo wouldn’t have had this Plan B target on standby, but he moved quickly and (likely) won a recruitment in a matter of two weeks.

He’s the No. 89 overall recruit and 17th-best small forward in the class, per the 247Sports Composite.

If Michigan State is going to get back to the glory days of competing for Big Ten titles every year, it needs to win recruiting battles like this when Plan A guys go elsewhere.

So now Izzo has landed Booker, likely Normand, Jeremy Fears, and he’s still targeting Coen Carr to sew up one of the best recruiting classes of his tenure.

I’ll admit, I was starting to doubt Izzo after the lack of portal pushing this offseason, but he’s turned me back into a believer. There’s a reason he’s a Hall of Famer.
