Michigan State football’s top tight end target Jelani Thurman announced a commitment date and the Spartans are right there in the mix.

Mel Tucker has been putting in some serious work on the recruiting trail this summer and while he has led Michigan State football to a top-25 class for 2023, fans can still grow restless at a lack of news.

That could soon change as four-star tight end Jelani Thurman is closing in on a decision.

On Sunday night, Thurman announced his commitment date of July 17, releasing a graphic of him sitting in a bathtub with letters from all the schools that have offered.

For those who like to read too much into recruiting graphics, the obvious aspects that stand out are the posters on the window. You can see Alabama and Auburn posters hanging up while there is a letter from Michigan State on the top of the pile along with another presumed finalist, Ohio State. But let’s not read too much into this.

Michigan State has been making Thurman a priority for a long time and it’ll be a huge recruiting victory if Tucker can beat out Ohio State, Alabama, and Auburn here.

Thurman would be a dream come true at the position for Ted Gilmore and Jay Johnson and he could take Michigan State’s tight end group to the next level.

He’s the No. 68 overall prospect and third-best tight end in the country on 247Sports. Michigan State’s 2023 class would be elevated tenfold with Thurman in the mix and he would be the Spartans’ second top-75 commit.
