Michigan State football is targeting a handful of talented defensive backs in the 2023 class but what would be the ideal finish to that group?

The 2023 class is coming together quite nicely for Mel Tucker and Michigan State football.

Over the weekend, the Spartans landed four-star linebacker Jordan Hall and a week earlier, Michigan State picked up pledges from four-star receiver Demitrius Bell and four-star cornerback Chance Rucker.

The commitment of Rucker gave Michigan State its second defensive back in the class, but with the Spartans in on so many top players in the position group for 2023, there is probably room for a few more secondary pieces — at least.

So what would be the ideal finish to the defensive back group in the 2023 class?

I’ll start with Jaylon Braxton who would be a nice addition. The four-star cornerback from Frisco, Texas, took an official visit to Michigan State last week and promptly received a crystal ball to the Spartans on 247Sports. He’s ranked the No. 245 overall prospect and 10th-best cornerback in the class and he would be a nice complement to Eddie Pleasant and Rucker.

The other cornerback who I think would be the perfect addition to the class would be Caleb Presley from Seattle, Wash., who was just on his official visit this past weekend. He seemed to love what he saw and it could mean a decision is coming soon as he plans his final visits. He’s currently my favorite cornerback in the class and he’s ranked the No. 78 prospect in the nation.

Assuming the Spartans have one spot left, my last choice would be Elliot Washington, a current four-star Alabama safety commit. He would be my top safety choice in this class if I’m the Michigan State staff and it feels like they will try to close on him this weekend during his official. He’s ranked the No. 109 prospect in the nation.

If they take two more safeties, I’d have to go with King Mack as my second option, followed by Ryan Yaites, and then Jayden Bonsu. Mack just took an official and it looks like MSU and Penn State are his leaders and Yaites is committed to LSU but the Spartans have always been high on his list. Bonsu was also a recent visitor and Michigan State made an impression.

Let’s say MSU takes four more defensive backs, my ideal finish to the group would be Braxton, Presley, Washington, and Mack.

That would give Michigan State a huge defensive back class, led by five four-star prospects.
