The first road game of the season won’t be an easy one despite how awful Washington looked last season. The Huskies will also be 2-0 heading into this game and they’ll have some newfound confidence with Kalen DeBoer leading the way and Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback.

But the Spartans’ defense is going to step up against an offense that has been underwhelming for years. Penix isn’t going to fix that on his own, especially after a forgettable 2021 season.

Mel Tucker will have his guys ready to drag Washington into the deep waters.

Prediction: Michigan State 31, Washington 21 (3-0)

Not long ago, PJ Fleck had Minnesota knocking on the door of the New Year’s Six, but the 2020 season saw a step back. The up-and-coming head coach bounced back in 2021 with a 9-4 season in which the Golden Gophers won the Guaranteed Rate Bowl even with Tanner Morgan having a down season.

Morgan is back for another year and Mohamed Ibrahim is back after suffering a season-ending injury in 2021. He’s a two-time 1,000-yard rusher and could give the Spartans problems. Thus offense is going to put up some points, especially with the top five receivers from a year ago returning, but the Spartans’ defense will be much better this season.

This will be a back-and-forth game but the Spartans will prevail.

Prediction: Minnesota 31, Michigan State 38 (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten)
