Michigan State basketball is ranked No. 10 on the “Next CBB Dynasty” rankings. Does Tom Izzo have what it takes to lead the Spartans back to the top?

Tom Izzo gained a lot of doubters this offseason with the decision to “stand pat” with his roster despite having some open scholarships.

Would Michigan State basketball fade into the background after years of being among the nation’s elite a-la the football program in the final years of Mark Dantonio? Many are worried that that’s the case here.

But Izzo feels confident with what he has heading into the 2022-23 season and while there’s plenty of talent, the depth may be a concern. But according to him, it’s impossible to keep 12 guys happy at all times so maybe trimming some fat on the roster is a good thing.

While some fans are questioning if Izzo still has “it” in him to win national title No. 2, a recent study on bookies.com ranked Michigan State No. 10 in terms of “next dynasties” in college basketball.

The study used these criteria to determine the ranking:

  • Coaching Experience
  • Future Program Stability
  • Program History
  • Recent Regular Season Results
  • Recent Tournament Results
  • Recent Recruiting
  • Future Recruiting
  • Roster Management/Player Development
  • Budget/Resources
  • Conference Positioning

The Spartans are behind only Kansas, Gonzaga, Villanova, Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA, Virginia, Baylor, and Duke. I could see them rising up a few spots with a prove-everyone-wrong 2022-23 season which I believe could happen given the talent returning.

Plus, Michigan State could have one of its best recruiting classes in the Izzo era for 2023 if all goes as planned. It’s already gotten off to a solid start with four-star point guard Jeremy Fears, but adding five-star center Xavier Booker and four-star wing Devin Royal would be huge.

Not everyone is giving up on Izzo.
