Michigan State football leads nation in total talent scheduled to take official visits
Mel Tucker has been an absolute menace on the recruiting trail with Michigan State football, scheduling a multitude of official visits.
The contrast between Mark Dantonio and Mel Tucker in terms of recruiting has been painfully clear over the past couple of years in East Lansing.
The third-year Michigan State football coach took over for Dantonio who retired suddenly following the 2019 season in which the Spartans finished 7-6 with a win over Wake Forest in the Pinstripe Bowl. It wasn’t exactly the kind of direction fans expected the program to be in after a 10-win season in 2017 and a playoff berth in 2015, but Dantonio still called the bowl victory a “program win” and had hats made for the occasion.
It seemed like a drastic fall from grace — and it was.
Recruiting was never consistently top-25 under Dantonio, but it had fallen off immensely in his final years at Michigan State and after Tucker took over, most of the former head coach’s players headed off to Group of Five and FCS programs via the transfer portal.
Heck, in Tucker’s first year, he won two games over ranked opponents even with a good chunk of his roster transferring to smaller schools the following offseason.
Now, Tucker is recruiting at an elite level and it really took off this past cycle as he landed a top-25 recruiting class and now he’s building an even better 2023 class.
In fact, he’s bringing in the most talent in official visits this summer — thus far — according to a study done by Bud Davis.
What this chart is telling us is that Michigan State is bringing in some truly elite talent on official visits this summer and the Spartans have also used up 58.9 percent of their official visits.
Yes, as of right now, Michigan State has more talent coming to East Lansing this summer than Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, USC, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma.
Folks, Tuck comin’.
