Michigan State Football: 4-star Daylen Austin should be top CB priority
Mel Tucker and Michigan State football should be prioritizing four-star cornerback Daylen Austin even after landing Eddie Pleasant III.
Michigan State football got its first cornerback commit of the 2023 class earlier this week as three-star Eddie Pleasant III officially became a Spartan.
But it looks like Mel Tucker and Co. aren’t done yet.
On Thursday night, four-star cornerback Daylen Austin announced his top eight schools and Michigan State made the cut along with Alabama, Penn State, LSU, Oregon, Georgia, Nebraska, and USC.
It’s nice to see the Spartans making top schools list with elite programs like this and it’s something fans are going to have to get used to as Tucker continues to impress on the recruiting trail. But to win this recruitment, he’s going to have to go all-in for Austin, which is something I think he needs to do.
Austin is probably 1B to Caleb Presley’s 1A on the coach’s big board and they’re likely not going to get both so putting the press on the more likely one to commit is important.
Plus, Austin is a future pro, in my opinion.
Michigan State is trying to rebuild that ‘No Fly Zone’ after a disastrous 2021 season and getting a guy like Austin will help that effort. He’s ranked the No. 141 overall recruit and 15th-best cornerback in the class, according to the composite.
Moving forward, it looks like the California native has to be a priority if the staff wants to piece together a nice secondary in the 2023 class. Pair him with Elliot Washington and you have yourself a nice setup for the next few years.
